I sewed this little gingham top to go with my skirt last summer and honestly thought I had blogged it. Like something out of a fever dream. Or that’s just how last year felt. The skirt is a 2019 make but I do have a separate blog post about it here. For my quick crop top I used the bodice from McCalls 8034. I save all my scrap fabric, which is annoying storing it, but this project is a good reminder why I do that.
For the m8034 I used the bodice and midriff pieces till the waistline. I sewed a size 6 and interfaced all my pieces, but I modified it to have the sweetheart neckline. I traced out how deep I wanted the neckline having the apex of the curve meeting at the top princess seam. I didn’t add boning at the side seams but thinking about it I would now for structure.
With the tie details I didn’t have enough fabric to cut the straps on the bias but that would have looked really cute with the gingham. The finished measurements of the shoulder tie straps are 24in long (per strap) by .25in wide. The front and back straps were sewn right sides together sandwiched in-between the white liner fabric. With right sides together I sewed the back seam and bottom hem. Leaving a hole in the bottom hem to flip the top to the right side. Lacing up the back I used a 67in tie (two long pieces sewn together) and somehow flipped through with a loop turner. If you don’t want to go through that much effort, I have used elastic cording for lacing up corset tops. And to finish it off I used 10 gunmetal grommets on the back piece.
