#DIY freezer paper stenciling

Hi guys! So back in 2015 I found some Pinterest craft using freezer paper and I still love it. Freezer paper is versatile in that its great for food storage and a ton of surprising crafts. If you’re looking to pick some up check in the area that carries wax paper and tinfoil. While freezer paper does have a waxy side like tradition wax paper, it is different.

One of my favorite ways to use freezer paper is by creating a stencil. You can print off designs or sayings online. My rose design is something I drew a couple years ago and decided to do another one. Whatever you decide you’ll want to draw your design on the paper side of the freezer paper. The wax side, or shiny side, is the side you will be ironing against whatever you want to transfer on.

I cut out my freezer paper the old fashion way with an exacto knife. But I have seen if you have a Cricut you can use one of those to cut out your design. Keep in mind you’ll be painting in the negative spaces of your image. For my paints I have acrylic paint on hand so I just used that. Honestly its much better when mixed with a textile medium (Anita’s brand from hobby lobby has a good one) but I ran out and didn’t feel like going to the store. The textile medium works with the acrylic to make it softer like a fabric paint. Which of course fabric paints are a perfect choice.

If you’re using a thinner t-shirt like I am be sure to put some type of cardboard between the front and back of the shirt. If you apply too much paint it can bleed through thinner materials. While painting, using a dabbing motion can help work the paint between the shirt fibers. I’ve seen some people like to pull off their freezer paper while their paint is still tacky, but I usually wait for mine to dry fully. I’ll let it set overnight and then slowly pull up using my hands and then tweezers for the intricate parts of the design.

My design is a little artsy with the shading in the roses. I know not everyone would feel comfortable attempting to paint that. But below I have some other designs I’ve created and transferred using the freezer paper. I hope this gave you some inspiration to try something new.

A baby shower gift. The onesie was done with freezer paper and the minky blanket was made by me with fabrics from Joann.
Another gift. One of the first freezer paper projects I did, this one is from 2015. I created and painted on my design on a canvas tote I sewed with fabric from Joann.
