Welcome to the world pastel #s8655

Hi everybody! The second blog post this week featuring thrift store fabric! Much wow. This pastel fabric was one I found when I purchased the red dress material from my last post. I always seem to have good luck finding fabrics 😉 or they find me. The pastel fabric only had about 1 1/2 yd. There was a lot I wanted to make with this fabric. However, the size and the sheerness stopped me from going too crazy.

Looking through my patterns I opted to go with a Mimi G Style #s8655. I’ve made this tie top pattern once before in a gingham, its featured on the blog! I decided I wanted to go with the full sleeve version and make a sort of 70’s vibes tie top/swim cover. This is a great pattern for beginners. It was sewn up rather quickly. The most time consuming aspect of this project was cutting out the fabric.

Same as the first time I sewed this pattern I made a size 6. To squeeze this top out out of this fabric, I shortened the back and front pattern pieces 1.5in. I also had to cut the back piece in two parts instead of on the fold. To make all the pattern pieces fit, one last mod I made was to cut my sleeves off the grain. I found cutting the sleeves off the grain pattern matched with the bodice better anyways. Honestly, this was a bit of fabric Tetris. I stared at the fabric and moved pieces around till I was satisfied.

For the construction of this top I went with exposed or mock French seams. The first top I made with this pattern I used French seams and I got a bit confused with the bias tape. The exposed French seams worked well this time around. This top will definitely be in high rotation in my summer wardrobe and beach days!
