I’ve had Billie Holiday’s “I’ll be seeing you” stuck in my head. Something about this shirt gave me nostalgic vibes. So this love story starts, I was on Ebay and found a rainbow stripe cotton voile fabric. Totally gorgeous and my style. But it was shipping from India. Extra shipping charges? Import fees? No thanks. So I looked online shopping within the states. I found these cool toned and warm toned striped cotton voile from Mood Fabrics.
I knew I wanted to do a wrap top so I picked up a New Look 6560 pattern from Joann Fabrics. This pattern is notoriously short on the midriff. Most reviews for this pattern the sewist extended the length of the shirt. I extended the front and back pattern pieces 2.5 inches. The long sleeve version of this top has billowy sleeves which look pretty with silky fabrics. The cotton voile I was working with is lightweight but it has a crisp hand. I removed 4in from the flare of the sleeve on each side (see below image.) If you like poofy sleeves you would definitely like it before however I was concerned the stripe print combined with the poof would remind me of a circus outfit.
Since this fabric is so lightweight I opted for French seams. The seams look so pretty on the inside with sheer fabrics. For the back of the shirt I wanted a division of the two colors of fabric. After some careful measuring and slow sewing I matched the stripe pattern from the cool to the warm toned side of the back. The back piece pattern has darts on it which I left out to keep my stripes straight.
I just finished sewing this blouse (random no makeup bathroom selfie) but I like in the picture above you can see the flare of the sleeves. For sizing reference I sewed an 8. Overall I love the finished look of this blouse. I’m sure this will be a summer favorite of mine with the breathability of the cotton.
