Hi guys! So today’s pattern hack was inspired by my fascination with online ‘window shopping’, Revolve ILY. I came across this chic-y deeky gingham skirt with a high slit and buttons, it was love at first sight. I realized it was an easy DIY too since I had all the materials on hand.
I had no similar patterns so I opted for simplicity 8420 as a starting point. I cut the back pieces of the skirt out as usual. I extended the length of all pattern pieces to reach my knee. On my inspo skirt, the front right piece crosses. I cut the right side of the skirt out on the fold for more fabric to work with. For the front left side, I cut the pattern piece out as usual. I sewed the sides to the front with French seams, as well as, the back pieces. The skirt pattern has a zipper in the back but that wasn’t necessary because of the front button closure.
After the sides and back were sewn, I had an open wrap skirt I was able to adjust. Trying on my skirt I marked the front right side where I would have my interfaced button placket, the buttonhole side. Once that was finished I was able to fit and adjust where I wanted the left side of the placket. The left side of the skirt has the placket with the buttons sewn on it. Keeping both my plackets in a straight line I did have to make an adjustment across the waist to be more fitted.
As I was in the process of sewing this skirt Mimi G dropped new spring patterns with her line of simplicity patterns. If pattern hacking isn’t your thing but you like this style of skirt check out her pattern S8927. You will love it! And yes I will be picking up that pattern too. It features a cute little button crop top I need in my life. Anyways my inspo skirt cost $126 I’m almost embarrassed to say how inexpensive mine is! The fabric was on sale for $2, the pattern for $2 and the buttons for $2.
